Ilhéu das Rolas (also called ilhéu Gago Coutinho, in honor of the famous aviator, geographer and Portuguese soldier) is located at the Southern tip of Sao Tome island. Rolas is the ideal place to enjoy total serenity, isolation and tranquility. This islet is known for its splendid beaches, its lighthouse, its high endemism and its monument indicating the Equator Line that crosses the island by 1km to the North.

Rolas is the third largest island in Sao Tome and Principe. This islet is where the imaginary Equator Line crosses and it has a renowned monument. This monument was made in honor of the geographer and cartographer Gago Coutinho who demonstrated the passage of the equator line by the islet, between 1915 and 1918.
Therefore, going to Rolas is to live an experience of having a foot in the North Hemisphere and other in the South Hemisphere, but also, feel at the center of the world, exactly 0° North latitude.
You will find astonishing geological curiosities, such as two holes through where the water blows, called volcano craters and unique marine and terrestrial species in the world that will leave you amazed.
How to travel to Ilhéu das Rolas ?

You have two options to travel to Ilhéu das Rolas, one is a traditional pirogue and another one is to take a boat from a small dock in Ponta Baleia (far south of Sao Tome).
The round trips by boat are carried out twice a day, on a daily basis by Pestana, a Portuguese hotel group. The reservations can be done in cash or by bank card at the hotel reception.
The departure from Ponta Baleia is at 10 o’clock AM and the return to Sao Tome is at 4h30 o’clock PM everyday. The sea crossing has aduration of 30 minutes. The round-trips cost approximately 30€ by boat and about 20 € by pirogue per each person, respectively.
