The small insularity of the São Tomé & Príncipe archipelago generates quite high costs because almost all manufactured products are imported.
For this reason, the population has developed a kind of hedonistic behavior in which it is easier to buy imported food from Europe than to produce them locally. However, the value of the local currency Dobra (STD) is weak. So, a trip to Sao Tome and Principe is not necessarily very expensive, except the round-trip airplane tickets in high time period.
Please, kindly estimate a large amount of cash for your excursions, rentals and shopping, because you will not be able to withdraw money from the ATMs in the archipelago, which accept only local bankcards. Do not expect to find banks or vending machines in Príncipe because there is none!
You should also know the markets, as well as most of the shops, stores and even the commercial centers in the archipelago such as CKDO, the Shopping Mall Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Intermar, Coconote, etc, do not accept bank cards.
Despite a very limited offer, restaurants and accommodation prices are suitable for any type of pockets. You will easily find your happiness according to your budget.
Depending on where you go, prices for souvenirs such as sculpture, basketry, costumes, jewelry can range from a price to double. Have preference to buy artworks from local artists in Ilheu das Rolas or in some of the archipelago's villages than to buy at the big hotels. You can also find quality articles for a good price at Casa dos Negreiros, in associations such as Ossobo and CACAU, as well as in small workshops of artists hidden in the archipelago.
The average price of an accommodation in Sao Tome and Principe with a breakfast included:
Attention : Regarding to the accommodations, please bear in mind that you will have to pay, directly at the hotels, a tourist fee of € 3 per person and per night. This fee is never included in the travel agencies costs and, for this reason, you must inquire whether the price includes the tourist tax or not.
A proper and simple meal in a small traditional restaurant will cost no more than € 5 per person (without a drink), while a delicious meal in a more conventional local restaurant will cost between € 6 and € 12 (without a drink). You will have to spend between € 20 and € 35 per person to taste a gastronomic meal.
Car rental without fuel and driver:
Car rental is the perfect option for adventure and freedom lovers. For 1 to 7 days rent , you should spend about 45 € per day for a Suzuki Jimmy, 50 € for a Rav4, 80 € for a Ford Ranger, or even 130 € for a GX Meadow (8 seats).
Be careful with rentals from private individuals because the insurance is not mandatory in Sao Tome & Principe. Also check with the agencies if the insurance is included in the car rental.
